Junior Sailing – Summer 2024

Dear SIYC Members,

This month, we look forward to kicking off the 2024 Junior Sailing Program when registration opens to club members on January 15 at 10:00 am. If you have children or grandchildren to enroll, please read on for details.

The SIYC Junior Sailing Program aims to provide high quality coaching along with a summer of fun on the water, creating a uniquely special experience for our sailors. Sailing Director Jeff Bresnahan has already begun recruiting instructors from a global pool of candidates and making plans for a stellar summer. This will be Jeff’s 23rd year as Sailing Director of SIYC, which includes oversight of our program.

The eight-week program begins Monday, June 17th and concludes on Friday, August 9th. Four-week options are available for some age groups. Boat check and orientation will be conducted on the morning of Sunday, June 16th with classes beginning the next day.

When selecting program dates, we must balance between schools and colleges with early to mid-August start dates and local schools running until late June.  This year, we will offer the following extra day open to any sailors, but which we hope will be particularly useful to those whose schools finish after our program begins:

Clinic on Saturday, June 29th from 8:30 am to noon for younger sailors, and 10 am to 5 pm for older sailors. The rain date for this session will be Saturday, July 13th.

Registration: Early enrollment figures are critical to optimizing class sizes and high quality instruction. Please note you do not need to pay when you register – rather, payment is due on or before April 15th. Fees not paid by that date or registrations received after that date will be subject to a $125 late fee per sailor. April 15th will also serve as the final day to withdraw from the program.

Our programs this year remain consistent with prior summers: JY Trainer, Opti, Feva/Laser (ILCA) and C420 classes. Boat rental is included with JY tuition, and an optional add-on for those who do not own boats in the Opti, Laser and C420 classes.  Please note that we have a limited number of Optis to rent, so confirmation with Jeff is required to select this option.

To register your junior sailors, log in to the SIYC website and follow the instructions for program enrollment under the Junior Sailing tab. Click here to register.

New this year, Shelter Island will be hosting a Laser/ILCA regatta on Saturday, June 22nd for both adult and youth sailors.

Questions? Feel free to reach out to [email protected] regarding any issues with online enrollment, placing your children in the right group, boats and equipment, etc.

Kindly spread the word to non-SIYC members who might be interested in the Junior Sailing Program. Registration opens to non-members on February 1st.

We look forward to sharing another fantastic summer with your families!

      Guidelines

      General Policies

The Shelter Island Yacht Club has established a fund to assist those Shelter Island junior sailors who would like to participate in the Shelter Island Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program but find it financially prohibitive.

The Educational Foundation will award a grant(s) to an approved individual(s) to assist them in participating in the Shelter Island Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program.  The funding is made directly to the Yacht Club for the benefit of the sailor.  The award can be made as a full or partial scholarship, and applied toward an 8-week or 4-week program, at the sole determination of the Junior Sailing Scholarship Committee.

      Categories of Grant Applications:

Four Week Scholarship – must qualify for Opti III or above (as determined by the Enrollment Page on the Junior Sailing Website at:  http://www.siyc.com

Eight Week Scholarship – available for Opti I through Opti ADV, Laser, and C420

The Junior Sailing Foundation will consider grant applications for amounts up to the current tuition of each class.  Sailors must be prepared to finance the balance of fees, including, but not limited to regatta fees, travel expenses, and social event fees.

The Junior Sailing Scholarship Committee reserves the right to grant partial funding, or may decide that none of the applicants adequately satisfies the scholarship criteria, in which case no scholarship will be awarded.

      Application forms are available at:

      Shelter Island Yacht Club

      12 Chequit Avenue

      Shelter Island Heights, NY  11965

      Application Guidelines

In judging applications, preference will be given to those who most closely reflect, in the opinion of the Scholarship Committee, the following criteria:

      1. Applicant MUST be a year-round resident of Shelter Island.

      2. Should demonstrate a commitment to and passion for sailing.

      3. Should demonstrate financial need – preference would be toward a sailor who works.

      4. Candidate must show good character by submitting two written references that will attest to the candidate’s scholarship, commitment to sailing, ability to work as part of a team, and willingness to prioritize community over self.
