Laser/ILCA
Welcome to the Shelter Island Yacht Club Laser/ILCA fleet.
SIYC restarted its Laser fleet for members in 2022, and now has approximately 30 Lasers on Club grounds. We are a casual but competitive fleet, usually racing on Monday evenings from Memorial Day through Labor Day, Monday afternoons on holidays, and on weekends post Labor Day as weather and schedules allow. SIYC club members who sail in our fleet range from junior sailors to adults who raced Lasers in the 1970s. We do not score our Monday night racing – we aim for 4-7 races per day on short courses, with daily debriefs and beverages post-racing to encourage everyone to get on the water and improve their dinghy skills. Despite the more relaxed format, there are a number of current and past collegiate sailors in the fleet and champions from a variety of classes, along with sailors who haven’t stepped foot in a Laser in many years. A number of our sailors frostbite Lasers throughout the winter in Sag Harbor once we clear the drysail area at SIYC.
Beginning in 2024, SIYC plans to host an annual Laser regatta, which in 2024 will be on Saturday, June 22.
