Junior Sailing

Welcome to the Shelter Island Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program.

The SIYC Junior Sailing Program is a four or eight-week program designed to teach children and teens the fundamentals of sailing while enjoying fun and the camaraderie of fellow sailors. Our sailors will learn rigging, boat handling and racing techniques along with the importance of teamwork and ethical competitive behavior. The core focus of the Junior Sailing program is to develop a life-long love of sailing.

The program runs from late June through mid-August and typically has an enrollment of over 120 children at different skill levels. Registration is open to members and associate members.

Our goal is to be the premier junior sailing program on Long Island Sound. Our Sailing Director, Jeff Bresnahan, has been the head sailing coach at Connecticut College for 29 years and has built one of the top collegiate sailing programs in the nation. Jeff recruits from a global pool of instructors, most of whom are competitive college sailors.

Our primary organizers are parent volunteers and volunteering is a key component of the program. Reach out to one of our Junior Sailing Committee members if you have any questions.

Summer 2024 registration for SIYC Members is open - click here to register.
