Big Boat Racing (PHRF)

PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Formula)

SIYC has a long history of PHRF racing.  Many of our Yachts have competed on the Eastern seaboard in a variety of regattas.  Many members participate in the OffSoundings Series, Block Island Race Week, Brooklyn Ocean Race, The Whitebread and the Newport to Bermuda Race.  SIYC hosts the following local events in July, August, and September.

The Heatherton Trophy Race  Invitational race is a point to point to point race in Gardiners Bay on July 3, 2016.

The SIYC Race week,  will be held in Gardiners Bay on August 5th – 7th, 2016.

The Edmund Ward Poor Memorial Trophy “Around the Island” race will start  and finish near the Shelter Island Yacht Club on September 4, 2016.

PHRF racing is open to both SIYC members and non-members. Each race typically has several divisions which encompass both cruising (non-spinaker) and spinnaker. A competitors party will be held immediately after racing on the SIYC South deck.  All boats must have a  current PHRF certificate, register online at Yacht Scoring and be at the race start at the proper time and place.  Follow the links on the ELIYA and the SIYC websites for registration. Information about ELIYA and area PHRF racing , as well as how to obtain a PHRF certificate, can be found at  Additional information about PHRF handicaps can be found on the US Sailing website
