Team SIYC Ready for Rolex Invitational Cup – How to Watch

by Will Ricketson

Dear members,

The big event is finally upon us. Thanks to an amazing few years of ambition and accomplishment, and springing from milestones in junior sailing, H12’s, Etchells, the Olympic Games (two of them!) the success of Prospector and our big-boat fleet, and now at the Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup, our island and our club have never been so prominent in the sailing world. We can all be proud.

Just the latest example of this could be seen this week, as Shelter Island Yacht Club, the smallest sailing organization ever to challenge for the Invitational Cup, headlined the pre-regatta press release:

“I am really looking forward to racing with my Shelter Island Yacht Club in the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup,” said Amanda Clark, who represented the USA in the 470 in two Olympic Games. “The club and its members did so much for supporting my Olympic sailing endeavors, I am honored give back and get involved.”

Paul McDowell, Shelter Island Yacht Club’s helmsman and one of the owners of the successful Mills 68 Prospector syndicate, welcomed the opportunity to compete in the event. “The Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup is probably the premier Corinthian regatta in the world, and I was anxious to be a part of our team and help in any way I can. It’s an absolute honor for our club to be invited. I sort of like the David and Goliath aspect to being the smallest club. We have some really terrific sailors, and this gives us a chance to show that on a larger stage. The club membership has been tremendously supportive of the effort, with many sailors volunteering to be a part of the team both on and off the water. The membership has also stepped up financially to help get us to the starting line.” Click here to read the full story.

After months of practice, racing and strategizing, our team, led by Team Captain Brendan Brownyard, is ready to race.

The Officers and Trustees of the Shelter Island Yacht Club would like to personally thank all of the SIYC members who have donated to our club’s Invitational Cup efforts so far and remind you that the club highly encourages all members to mark their calendars for the Invitational Cup, and appear in Newport either on land or afloat to cheer on our team.

If you have not made a donation and wish to, please contact Lori Kimmelmann at 631-749-0888 or lkimmelmann@siyc.com and have your donation put on your house account.
