About
Shelter Island
Shelter Island
is accessible from either the North or South Fork of Long Island via
ferries. The phone numbers for the ferry companies are: North
Ferry Company (631-749-0139), South Ferry (631-749-1200). No
reservations are necessary for either ferry. Boats on both sides run
approximately every 10-15 minutes, and the trip across is approximately
5-10 minutes.
Fuel and
Pumpout station facilities are available at Picozzi’s Marina
(631-749-0045) at the head of Dering Harbor directly across from the
Shelter Island Yacht Club.
Shelter Island
has a mandatory recycling law and you will find containers marked for
this purpose on the west side of the clubhouse.
Shelter Island
has no public transportation system, but most services are only a
short, pleasant walk away. The ferry to Greenport on the North Fork is
only a 5 minute walk. Walk on passenger cost is $1.00 each way. There
are a few cab companies on Shelter Island to take you to further
destinations, and a employee of the club can call to arrange a pickup
at the clubhouse.
The Shelter
Island Chamber of Commerce offers a complimentary map listing
businesses & points of interest to make your stay more enjoyable.
These are available for you at the Clubhouse registration desk. The
Shelter Island Chamber of Commerce phone number is 631-749-0399
